Introduction

Well Asper students, after an eventful year we have almost made it through! A combination of the pandemic, virtual classes, a historic strike and so much more made this year eventful, but nevertheless we persisted! In this blog, check out some recaps of amazing Asper events, campus requirements, and a special farewell!

Events

The month of March had many fantastic initiatives that show how special it is to be an Asper student! Check out below to hear about the Future of Indigenous Business Banquet, 5 Days for the Homeless campaign, and the 55th Annual Commerce Business Banquet!

The Future of Indigenous Business Banquet (FIBB) was hosted by the University of Manitoba Indigenous Commerce Students (UMICS) on March 17th from 6-9pm. The event was hosted virtually and was a great success to all attendees. This year, FIBB brought together students, corporate representatives, and Indigenous leaders to spark discussion about Indigenous business in Manitoba. Centered around the theme of Perseverance, FIBB featured a dynamic panel discussion with a few of Manitoba’s top Indigenous trailblazers as well as a special guest appearance.  The event was free for all University of Manitoba students, and attendees came away truly inspired and connected with the local indegenous business community.

The 5 Days for the Homeless 2022 campaign has officially come to an end! Everyone on the 5 Days team including co-chairs Chris Chin and Shaun Moore wish to thank all of the Scoop readers for your support and contributions. This year’s 5 days campaign had multiple successful events including a pool tournament, a paint night, trivia event, and a successful 5 Acts concert closer! As well as much success on campus and around the city during 5 Days week at booths! Thanks to the generosity of the community, the 5 Days team was able to surpass their donation goal and hope to continue to do so in the future to support RAY in hopes of continuing to help homeless youth.

The Commerce Business Banquet is the largest student-led networking event in all of Canada and a pride of the Asper School of Business! The 55th annual commerce Business Banquet was held at RBC convention center this past March 29th from 5:30-9pm. The banquet holds the proud tradition of fostering a unique link between students and business leaders in our community since its inception in 1966. The Commerce Business Banquet has matured into a distinguished and well-respected event not only for the University of Manitoba but also for the City of Winnipeg and the Province of Manitoba. With over 500 corporate representatives, students and special guests in attendance, the event was a major success! The keynote speaker Catherine Metrycki, founder of Callia, gave an excellent speech and inspired all in attendance by promoting the theme of empowerment. The Business Banquet team wanted to thank everyone in attendance and can’t wait for another event next year.

Student Stories

This month, student stories wanted to shine a spotlight on Asper grads! These past few years the graduating classes from the Asper School of Business have faced numerous challenges and developed serious resilience. This past March, The Asper School of Business hosted an in person graduation dinner at the Met. The dinner was attended by Asper grads, their families, representatives from the business community, and staff. The Asper community received many accolades such as Fajr Awan who received the CSA Leadership award for her outstanding involvement with the Asper community. In addition, the class valedictorian Michela Troia gave a wonderful speech to her class that fully encapsulated the unique experience of the current Asper graduating class. Once again a huge congratulations to all Asper grads this year and the Scoop wishes you the very best in your future endeavours!

University Life

The University of Manitoba is officially open once again to students. Although classes for most Asper undergrads are not taking place in person, the Drake center is once again open for business! But before you return to campus, there are a few things you should be aware of!

  • The University of Manitoba has lifted their policy on vaccination requirements. Students are no longer required to show proof of vaccination or negative tests in order to come to campus.
  • Although the mask mandate has been partially lifted around Winnipeg, masks are still required on the University campus. Particularly, KN95 masks are required, they can be picked up free of charge at the UMSU Service Center in the University Center building.
  • There are plenty of in person study spots available! Be sure to head to campus if you are in the market for a new study spot as finals approach.

A Personal Note

Hello there! My name is Avery Groeneveld and I have been the Digital Communications Coordinator on the Commerce Students’ Association this past year… and if that sounds confusing it means mostly that I have had the privilege of being the author of this blog! Starting the Asper Scoop was no small task, establishing a monthly blog that was a way to connect students with all areas of Asper while still being engaging to read seemed very daunting at first! But with the help of an amazing community this blog has grown tremendously and I am so proud of what was accomplished. From the bottom of my heart thank you to everyone who has assisted me with this blog, to all of the event planners, the students who were featured, and everyone in between, this blog could not have happened without you! I have had such a wonderful time getting to know and learn about different areas and communities within Asper and if this blog gave just one other person that same experience, it has all been worth it. Seeing as my role has officially come to an end, it is now time to pass the torch onto the next Communications Coordinator who will work hard to bring the Scoop to you every month and continue to establish its legacy. This blog has been an enormously big part of my life this past year so thank you so much dear readers for taking the time to tune in every month. Conceptualizing and creating how it would look was a very difficult task, but I’m so proud of what I’ve accomplished. Thank you for reading and please come on back- there will always be more news to update you with and puns to make 🙂

All the best,

Avery Groeneveld
