The Actuarial Student National Association Convention (ASNA) is the largest gathering of actuarial students, academics, industry members, and business professionals throughout Canada. The conference aims to provide a platform for students to broaden their knowledge of the actuarial industry, expand their network within the industry, and securing employment for upcoming work terms. The theme of the convention this year was “Three Decades of ASNA”, as the 30th anniversary was celebrated in Niagara Falls.
There were many informative events planned for those attending the conference, aimed to educate us on emerging topics in the industry; these came in the form of many seminars and information sessions, dinners, and other networking events. My favourite seminars held at the conference were those on Machine Learning and Ratemaking. I also had the opportunity to network with many companies in order to gain insight in the actuarial industry. The most memorable conversation I have had was with Munich Re, in which we discussed how Machine Learning will impact underwriting processes. Another fantastic opportunity was through the career fair, where students had the opportunity to network with business professionals in aim to expand their knowledge and secure employment. However, ASNA was by no means all work. The plethora of social events held for the students allowed for friendships to be made, and fun to be had. These events ranged from socials to a cultural night.
Overall, I have learned many incredible things from the conference, but most importantly, the soft skills I’ve developed allowed me to step out of my comfort zone in networking with employers. I have also learned immensely about the opportunities available to Asper students. I would highly encourage all actuarial students that have the opportunity, to attend ASNA.
