The following post was written by Jesse Greenberg and Shona Grewar, co-chairs of the CSA’s Commerce Week Committee.
The Commerce Week kicked off Tuesday with the post-Bachelor of Commerce Luncheon hangout at The MET Patio, where new first year Asper students networked and mingled with other students at a gorgeous rooftop patio on a sunny Winnipeg downtown afternoon. First impressions were made and everyone was ready to begin their professional university career. Thank you SkyZone Winnipeg for donating a prize package for that afternoon.

The following day was Buddy Day, where student leaders and new entries to the Asper School participated in tours around the Drake Centre and across Campus to explore the new stomping grounds for so many freshmen and freshwomen. Breakfast, coffee, and sponsored David’s Tea was served in the morning, while corporate sponsors and Student Action Groups had booths for all first year Asper students to learn about the endless opportunities entering into the school year. In the afternoon, first year students and their Big Buddies joined together for a large BBQ lunch, with 103.1 Virgin Radio posting up for some tunes, followed by gathering at The HUB Social Club to end the day.

The third day of The Commerce Week began with the first ever CSA Textbook Market sale, where students are able to drop off their used textbooks, list their own price and have it entered into our system with their contact information. Students are welcome to browse the selection of student textbooks and upon purchasing one of the books, we will retrieve the sellers contact information and let them know they can pick up their money from their sold textbook without having to do any work. This is an excellent service to students and you should not pass it up! The sale will continue Monday (12th) through Wednesday (14th) from 10:00am – 3:00pm each day in the Asper Commemorative Room on the second floor. We encourage you to drop off some books and see what the market can do for you! For more information, visit our Facebook event.
The TCW beverage gardens on Thursday and Friday were a huge success. Thousands of students from across the university came out to enjoy some cold drinks, listen to our DJ’s play all afternoon and take part in a variety of games, including Spikeball, Giant Ball Pong, and Giant Jenga. Additionally, Pizza Pizza was giving away free slices all day as well as Monster energy drinks at no charge. Huge thanks go out to the volunteers for contributing all week. If you see and volunteers or big buddies on campus please give them your appreciation, and thank them by volunteering for the next event yourself!
The Commerce on the Quad social occurred Friday night with a sold-out crowd. The event showcased local musical talent Randi Johnson, The Barefoot Brotherhood (featuring our very own Vice-President of Corporate Relations and President, Myles Dancho & George Semchuk), and ended off with headliner The Mulvey Street Maniacs rocking the night away. More free pizza, a Corona beer fridge giveaway, and cheap drinks kept the night popular with the crowd. As the evening progressed, the tent in the quad was lit up in a mellow and beer bash style vibe with what will become an annual event to kick off the school year and all Commerce Socials to come. Many were turned away at the door, so be sure to purchase your Commerce Social tickets well in advance or you will regret that you didn’t do it sooner! Big thanks to The HUB for hosting the after party event!
This is just a taste of what’s to come for your school year. Stay informed and keep getting involved because the fun is just getting started.
The next Commerce Social will take place September 30th. Be sure to like Commerce Socials on Facebook, and follow them on Twitter and Instagram for more information as it becomes available!
